6-6 heading into the bottom of the 7th. lotta spirit on display tonight; good to see pujols get that monkey off his back and get a hit. maybe he'll relax now . . . .
let's get outta here with a win.
Update [2006-10-14 0:17:48 by lboros]: stl ties the series, 1-1; settle in folks, it's gonna be a long series. scott spiezio and taguchi are the heroes, but is it a mere coincidence that the cardinal bats came alive after albert pujols finally got a hit? i don't want to oversell this idea -- i don't want to give albert credit for the achievements of his teammates -- but when he struggles, the entire team looks lost. albert took a tough at-bat against mota, finally got himself a base hit; thereafter the cardinals started banging the ball all over the yard.
that was fun.

This is a must win for this team
and they sure as hell are playing like it.Let's get a 1-2-3 right here and see what our little engines that could: Belly, Molina and PH can do.

I don't think this is a "must win"...
We're facing Trachsel-Perez-Glavine on short rest-Maine-Trachsel... A good team can take four of those games.I don't know if the Cards are a good team though...

I'm just saying...
we're facing an opponent with a massive weak spot... ie their next five starting pitchers are all solidly below average. So, given that, I think it's possible the KC Royals could take four of five from them... No need to throw in the towel.guayzimi - October 13, 2006
It's a must win
because you need to get a split on the road. You don't want to force that to be late in the series, especially when you've got guys out there with fatigued arms.In theory, nothing is a must win until 3-0, but you have to believe this game is damn close.
Plus, you don't want to come up 'just short' in 2 games to start the series.

Last Report from Met's Home Turf
Battery will die before the birds tonight. Sitting here at the home of Met's winter camp sporting my Card's cap at the bar. These "fans" notice when Delgado goes long, but not much else, and last inning was just good for "What Happened?"With Molina (our March and October slugger) getting a hit, we finally have more hits than free passes issued. The home fans are looking like they will drop this one. Let's hope so.

Cards survive through Carp's innings to get to our shutdown bullpen.Cards also knock out the Mets starter to tee off on the Mets's shaky bullpen.

What a crazy friggin' game and I have to step away from baseball for the evening cuz I might lose my mind if i don't but I had to stop by and say congrats on getting the W and tying up the series.I have this feeling of dread that like we had ya and we let ya go and now we're in for war in this series. I also am afraid of what might have been awakened in your man pujols this game. lord knows what he'll do from here out.
I feel like my boys didnt play their best and Willie had some bonehead decisions (sticking with mota)....But I gotta give credit where its due, your hitters worked our pitchers hard tonight and got the job done.

Lame Post by me
Those of you that live near St. Louis and ever listen to "The Arch" radio station have probably heard their little "So Taguchi down the left field line" lyric sung to the tune of Musical Youth's "Pass the Dutchie."I took it upon myself to write a verse, since I'm too excited to sleep.
And if you don't know the song, this will be even dumber to you. If you do....well, if nothing else, the tune of the chorus will be in your head as you go to sleep...
It was late in Flushing LCS Game 2
(How does it feel when you're about to lose ?)
You could feel it 'cause Wagner was ready to come through
(How does it feel when you're about to lose ?)
So came up, he's an automatic out
(How does it feel when you're about to lose ?)
I about passed out as I heard Joe Buck cry out
(How does it feel when you're about to lose ?)
"So Taguchi down the left field line"

I thought this game was going to be a shootout
and I'm suspecting the rest of the games from here on out not started by Glav and Carp will be shooutouts too. Funny thing is I like the Cards' chances in shootouts because of all the clutch hitting they have--Pujols, Edmonds, Speez, and even Molina. And then there's Taguchi. Jesus Christ did anybody actually think that he'd homer off Wagner?
Anyway I think there's going to be some 12-10 games in this series....fine by me....the Cards won cause their bullpen was better tonight, end of story.

To me it was a game of foul balls
Man, did Eckstein and Pujols and others work those Mets pitchers in the later innings. Makes me wonder why they can't do this to a starter. Does some switch flip and they're just able to keep fouling stuff off? I don't know, but somehow I wouldn't be surprised if this game set some kind of record for pitches fouled off. I bet retrosheet doesn't keep track of that.Huge. Go Birds. They made me believe they have it tonight.

Never Count This Team Out
Let be said now and never be forgotten:Never, ever, ever, count the 2006 Cardinals out.
Doubt them. Question them. Criticize them. Expound upon their flaws, their failures, the holes in their lineup, their vulnerabilities. Count all these things on your fingers, and when you run out of fingers, count them on your toes, and then start counting them on the hairs on your head.
Add these things all up, but when you're done, and I'm talking to you Keith Lawless of ESPN, never, ever count this team out.
The 2006 Cardinals are touched. They are better than you think they are. They are better than you ever imagined. But most of all, they are better than any team playing against them.
So prepared to be amazed, astounded, and befuddled.
Just don't be suprised when they win. Because after tonight, they cannot be stopped.

Put Spezio AND Rolen in the lineup tomorrow...
Duncan is hardly touching the ball, and PDub strikes out too much as well. Put Spezio in LF and Rolen at 3B. Have a lineup of...Eck
Speez
Puj
Edmonds
Encarnacion
Rolen
Belliard
Molina

Interesting options for TLR
Choose 2 of 3 between Duncan, Rolen & Spezio. Here's some stats (avg/obp/slg/ops):vs. Trachsel (career)
Duncan (2 AB) .000/.333/.000/.333
Rolen (41 AB) .244/.326/.366/.692
Spezio (7 AB) .143/.143/.143/.286
vs. righties (2006)
Duncan (233 AB) .318/.390/.644/1.034
Rolen (378 AB) .310/.381.540/.921
Spezio (191 AB) .251/.363/.555/.918
Tough call. No one has an obvious advantage with Trachsel. Is Rolen's shoulder healthy enough to hit? We obviously saw that it's working great with the glove. In looking at this decision, here's a less-than-obvious choice: Wilson. Check out his career numbers against Trachsel (20 AB's):
.400/.429/.900/1.329 with 1 2B and 3 HR
Might be tempting to put Wilson in LF hitting 5th behind Edmonds with these numbers. Now that I'm at it, here are the career numbers against Trachsel for the other likely starters:
Eckstein (10 AB) .200/.273/.200/.473
Pujols (14 AB) .357/.526/.429/.955
Edmonds (12 AB) .167/.231/.417.647
Encarnacion (24 AB) .167/.310/.250/.560
Belliard (22 AB) .227/.292/.364/.655
Molina (7 AB) .143/.143/.143/.286
Doesn't exactly set up for us to pound him, does it? Looks like we need to get Wilson into the lineup and get he and Albert some RBI opportunities. Another thought - do you sub Wilson for Encarnacion in this game? Decisions, decisions, decisions.....
Don't you know that Tony is having a good time with all these decisions he has to make. There aren't near as many things set in stone as there have been the past two seasons.
GO CARDS. I am going to bed.
wildman - October 14, 2006
Yeah...
Trachsel is oddly proficient against the Cards... Rolen, Enc, Belly, Eck, Edmonds, Molina and Speez are 25 for 123 (.203) against him lifetime...Seems like Speez and PW have to be in there.
guayzimi - October 14, 2006
Spiezio has to play...
TLR should ride the hot hand. With PDub's stats against Trachsel, put him in LF and start Speez at 3B. Bring Rolen in as a PH or defensive replacement.
jdubya - October 14, 2006
Albert's return
From lboros original post tonight:"check out this comment from toris34 in the morning thread: "Over the past 3 seasons, St. Al[bert] has had 9 times where he went 3 consecutive hitless games. In the 9 follow-up games he's 18-36 w/ 7 hr's and 4 walks."
So Eckstein & Duncan go a collective 0-for-8 in front of him, and what does he do? 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and three runs scored. And that AB in the 7th was inspiring. What a competitor.
And he returned to good baserunning tonight after that bad move last night. Played it perfectly on sticking at first on the ball in the corner in the 7th, and snagged second on a similar ball in the 9th.
If those guys in front of him start getting on base, this could get fun.

From MLB.com
This is interesting:"Those who fear the number 13 (triskaidekaphobia) and Friday the 13th (paraskevidekatriaphobia) are in store for a double dose of fright around the LCS. Facts to keep in mind for the rest of this day:
In the NLCS, keep a very, very close eye on the end of tonight's game. Wagner wears No. 13 for the Metropolitans (13 letters). He closed out Game 1. What will happen if No. 13 is on the mound for Game 2? Just another reason to watch."
Good for us. Not so good for pondscum.
stevenucla - October 14, 2006
And this:
"Two current LCS players were born on the 13th of a month, but not Friday. Oakland ace Barry Zito was born on May 13, 1978 (a Saturday). St. Louis catcher Yadier Molina was born on July 13, 1982 (a Tuesday). That same season, the Cardinals went on to win their most recent world championship. Is it a sign?"stevenucla - October 14, 2006

The cards
seem to have that "magic" that you see from the teams that are headed to the ship (stealing a line from the moveie hardball). Great game
Look I am the biggest pessimistic fan a team could have. So and Scott made me a believer tonight. Anything can happen. I biotched about the losing steaks, the lack of great managerial skill during key games (not bringing in Wainwright in July), but none of that matters. We now have home-field advantage. If we can hold that, here we come Detroit?! Go Cards and make 2k6 our most recent title, not the Whitey era.dbtimmay - October 14, 2006

lessons learned from past failures?
anyone else think maybe, just maybe Tony learned something from lasts years postseason? Last year Larry Walker could not buy a hit in October. While JRod mostly was hitting very well, and from the left side just like Larry. We lost last year because we could not hit. Now it was not all Larry by any means. But it was a problem. And now tonight, err, last night he sat down a mightly struggling Scott Rolen for hot hitting Spezier. And it payed off big time with a win. Anyone think last year has anything to do with last nights decision?
if so, who says you can't teach a old dog new tricks.

Wow....
What a game! Most impressed with Edmonds home run, Spezio's triple, Belliard's outstanding defense the whole game, Carp battling when he had nothing, Albert's battle for that single...man, I don't think I ever saw anyone so determined to get a hit...Kinney's working himself into, and than right out of trouble, Johnson's pitching, WOW....Wainwright's curve, Rolen's defensive gem...that perfect throw to AP....just Wow! To win a game like that, the battling back and forth. I think the team for once needed to pick Carp up instead of the other way around, and boy, did they! Oh, don't let me forget to say SOOOOOOOOOOOO Wonderful!jillsinmo - October 14, 2006
